There’s no quick route to Cabins, West Virginia. And no quick route to the nearby North Fork Mountain Inn.
Tucked in the folds of the Appalachian Mountains, the closest big towns are Petersburg and Elkins, each nearly an hour away (just try to drive the speed limit on these serpentine roads), and neither town is home to more than 7,000 people.
Once you get to Cabins, it’s a 20-minute drive along a serpentine mountain road to the three-story inn named for its location, North Fork Mountain. With little more to mark the route than thick hardwood forest, the occasional glimpse of a startled whitetail deer and even rarer views of the rocky Potomac River, the inn is the very definition of a getaway vacation. And it’s worth every circuitous mile you’ll drive.
