Celebrate the 250th Anniversary of America with These April Events

Our state has made countless contributions to United States’ history, and those accomplishments are being celebrated this year as part of America 250-Ohio. Take part in the festivities during these five events happening this month.

If you consider yourself a history buff, this assortment of America 250-Ohio events are right up your alley. In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, these gatherings provide a new perspective on our state’s contributions across the semiquincentennial, from an American Revolution-era encampment to a discussion on Cleveland eateries of yore.

Reenactment: American Revolution in the Ohio Country | Apr. 15
Visit the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus to take in the sights and sounds of an American Revolution-inspired encampment, featuring Virginia Militia, Captain Joseph Ogle’s Company of the Ohio County and the 8th Pennsylvania Regiment. War buffs will delight in hearing era-appropriate tunes from Heritage Fife and Drums. ohiostatehouse.org

Lost Restaurants of Downtown Cleveland | Apr. 16
Author Bette Lou Higgins is an expert on the Forest City’s former eateries. Listen to her speak on these at the Cleveland Heights Public Library in support of her 2021 book on the topic. Though Cleveland had humble culinary beginnings, its food scene grew over the centuries and cemented several local legacies, including English immigrant Fred Harvey, who operated the Harvey House in Tower City, among other spots. heightslibrary.org

America 250-Ohio – Granville Moves: Transportation | Apr. 18
Get your seat at the Granville Historical Society for “How Missed Opportunities Shaped the Community.” The forum dives into a transportation timeline from 1776 to present day, posing questions about how railway systems, vehicles and more impacted our hometowns. Presenters hone in on Granville’s character, which was affected by the late arrival of the railroad, among other factors. granvillehistory.org

Piatt Castle’s World War II Living History Event | Apr. 18
Mark your calendars for an immersive experience featuring World War II demonstrations and skirmishes at Mac-A-Cheek Castle in West Liberty. With the chateau-like castle as a backdrop, stick around to interact with Greater Ohio Living History Association members. Plus, take part in a discussion that examines whether or not the American Revolution was a world war. piattcastle.org

America 250 Commemorative Tree Planting Ceremony | Apr. 24
Honor our nation’s anniversary through this “Heritage Trees: Planting History” initiative. At noon, find a spot outside the Logan Family Aquatic Center to watch a tree-planting with species native to our state, including white oaks. The ceremony’s goal is to create a living, sustainable legacy that connects local destinations to the American Revolution. ohiohistory.org
