Win Free Ice Cream for a Year at Handel’s Opening in Fairlawn

If the opening of a new Handel’s location doesn’t immediately grab you, maybe the chance to win free ice cream for a year will do the trick.

On July 17, the newest location of the beloved Youngstown-based ice cream chain opens its doors in the Summit County city of Fairlawn, and the first 100 customers in line get a one-in-100 shot at winning free ice cream for a year.

Starting at 11 a.m., visitors can enjoy live music, giveaways, the chance to win Handel’s swag and more. But the biggest winner of the day will be among the first 100 visitors in attendance. Those 18 years and older among that group will be entered into the grand prize drawing. 

On this day of family fun, the furry members of our families will not be forgotten. While supplies last, customers will receive a Handel’s dog bowl with the purchase of a pack of Dogsters. These peanut butter treats are made especially for dogs and are a perfect way to bring them in on the fun of an ice cream run.

Handel’s has been a beloved staple of the Ohio ice cream scene since Alice Handel started serving the homemade treat at her husband’s Youngstown gas station in 1945. That one location grew into what is now more than 150 corporate and franchise locations across the United States

Danielle and Tyler Hysell are the northeast Ohio natives behind the new 2,600-square-foot shop Handel’s location at 2935 W. Market St. in Fairlawn. 

“Handel’s has been a staple in our lives — growing up, it was a place that felt special, nostalgic and delicious. When the opportunity arose to bring some of that joy to others, especially in our community, we knew it was the right move,” Danielle Hysell said in a July 14, 2025, press release. “We wanted to build something our kids could grow up around, something we could be proud of and something that genuinely brings people together.”
