Apollo’s Fire Presents “Winter Sparks”

Cleveland-born group Apollo’s Fire has been delivering electrifying renditions of classical pieces since 1992. This month, the baroque orchestra brings the same intensity to four northeast Ohio performances.

Apollo’s Fire has the antidote to the Buckeye State’s recent subzero temperatures with their intimate “Winter Sparks” tour. The Grammy Award-winning baroque orchestra, founded by Cleveland harpsichordist Jeannette Sorrell in 1992, is set to play four shows around northeast Ohio at the end of the month, stopping in Cuyahoga Falls (Jan. 29), Cleveland Heights (Jan. 30), Chagrin Falls (Jan. 31) and Rocky River (Feb. 1).

Because of the small-group nature of the ensemble, Apollo’s Fire performances have a warm, intimate feel. The group’s signature sound comes from its mastery of period instruments, including oboe, violin, cello, recorder and flute. Audiences can look forward to hearing Bach’s “Orchestral Suite No. 2,” which features baroque flautist Kathie Stewart, as well as Marais’ “Sonnerie de Sainte Geneviève du Mont,” highlighting South Korean cellist Hyunkun Cho.

As a bonus, the quartet of performances plan to feature a Vivaldi oboe concerto with one of North America’s leading baroque oboists, Debra Nagy, at the helm. The winter concert series is sure to delight new listeners and old fans alike, highlighting several beloved principal musicians taking the spotlight in their own way.

Be sure to stick around after Apollo’s Fire’s Cleveland Heights show, held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, to take part in a post-performance event titled “Afterglow.” Concert-goers can stay for light snacks, sparkling beverages and an evening of conversation.
