4 Art Exhibitions to See in Ohio This Winter

From nature-inspired ceramic works on display in Cincinnati to a collection of watercolor works in Dayton, these museums offer much to explore.

Ohio has long been a hotbed for artistic expression, from elegant ceramic and glass works to engaging and inspiring paintings and sculptures. This winter, museums across our state host exhibitions that offer insight into the Native American experience as well as the passage of time through the natural landscape. From detailed etchings by the iconic Rembrandt to a reverential piece depicting the Biblical transfiguration, these four art exhibitions are waiting this winter.

Rembrandt: Masterpieces in Black and White | Through May 17
See rare etchings from 17th century Dutch artist Rembrandt, known primarily for his oil paintings but also praised for these delicate, shadowy compositions. In his time, etchings were seen as a way to reproduce famous artworks; Rembrandt flipped the script and used the medium to create powerful portraiture, landscapes, narrative scenes and still lifes. View nearly 50 of these works in the Fifth Third Gallery at Cincinnati’s Taft Museum of Art.

Tony Foster: Exploring Time, A Painter’s Perspective | Through May 17
British artist Tony Foster’s watercolor works capture how time shapes the land, from fleeting changes in light to vast geological and biological transformations. Organized into four themes — geological, biological, human and fleeting moments — this diaristic exhibition housed in the Dayton Art Institute invites visitors to consider the planet’s continual evolution and reflect on the visible passage of time.

still/emerging: Native American Works on Paper | Through June 7
For the first time, the Cleveland Museum of Art is highlighting its expansive collection of drawings and prints from Native American artists. The exhibition surveys the media Native people have used to explore their heritage, including woodcut portraits by T.C. Cannon and color lithographs from Jaune Quick-to-See Smith. View nearly 30 works spanning the 1950s to present day, putting a spotlight on the perspectives of those from various backgrounds and tribal affiliations.

Transfiguration: Rachel Liebskind and the Tiffany Window | Through July 5
Visit the Akron Art Museum’s Judith Bear Isroff Gallery for a look at a restored Tiffany stained glass window. It depicts the transfiguration of Christ, as well as new details from contemporary artist Rachel Libeskind. The resulting artwork is a recontextualization of how the unimaginable is depicted across early cinema and religious iconography. One element Libeskind added to the piece is a chrysalis, serving as a metaphor for transformation.
