Columbus’ Cartoon Museum Unveils New Permanent Exhibit and Reimagined Galleries

The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum at The Ohio State University shared its new look with the public May 23.

The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum’s new permanent exhibition titled “The Story of Comics” reimagines the way the public experiences this institution dedicated to cataloging and preserving the artform of comics and cartoons.

Unveiled when the museum reopened May 23, “The Story of Comics” traces the history and evolution of cartoons over the course of 400 years. It features original artwork, themed gallery spaces and interactive elements that allow visitors to learn about comics, how they are created and the techniques artists use to get their messages across.

“This is an exciting new chapter for the museum,” said Jenny Robb, head curator of comics and cartoon art, in an April 28 press release that announced the reopening date. “We’ve reimagined how we present these rare works, showcasing the breadth and depth of our collection. The new exhibit highlights the storytelling and artistry of the original drawings and artifacts.”

A major international exhibition titled “Chris Ware: Life is Complicated” opened at the same time as the museum unveiled its new permanent exhibition. The Columbus show is  the only presentation of the artist’s works in the United States and is open through Jan. 3. “Life is Complicated” features an immersive installation created specifically for the museum’s reimagined gallery space. It features original drawings and other objects tied to the artist’ career.

The museum offers free workshops for kids and families throughout the summer, including an Aug. 8 day of events featuring “Cathy” cartoonist Cathy Guisewite, author of children’s graphic novels and free sketches from cartoonists.
