Independence Dam State Park to Host ‘A Walk Through History’ Event

This two-day event on Aug. 8 and 9 celebrates our nation’s 250th birthday with around 80 reenactors sharing the story of America from 1776 forward.

Around 80 reenactors and educators bring to life a two-day “A Walk Through History” at Independence Dam State Park in Defiance on Aug. 8 and 9. Hosted by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the event is part of this year’s America 250-Ohio celebration.

During the event, which runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, living-history camps, historical demonstrations are set to immerse attendees in the history of our nation, stretching back to the days of the American Revolution. The weekend includes a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Fort Starvation War of 1812 memorial on Saturday at noon.

The Plymouth Fife and Drum Corps will lead a procession of War of 1812 reenactors to the memorial, where the Daughters of 1812 Kentucky Chapter will offer brief remarks before placing the wreath. The ceremony also features a bugler tribute, the National Anthem performed by Girl Scouts and a flyover by a World War I-era biplane (weather permitting).

“As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, this event offers a meaningful way to reflect on the people and moments that shaped our nation,” Ohio Department of Natural Resources director Mary Mertz said in a July 27 press release. “Independence Dam is the perfect setting to honor that legacy, and we’re thrilled to invite Ohioans to experience this living history.”

The “A Walk Through History” event is free and open to the public, offering both families and history buffs alike a way to connect with our state’s rich past surrounded by the natural beauty of Independence Dam State Park. Entertainment and food trucks will also be part of the weekend lineup.
