Heritage Highway
There are faster ways to traverse our state, but the National Road offers travelers fascinating stops along the way.
In an era when we prefer, or at least are more used to, the high-speed whoosh of the interstate, it’s easy to forget that not too long ago we drove a different sort of highway. In Ohio, happily, we have at least one long, colorful, meandering reminder of those days when travel was slower, but more interesting.
That reminder is the route known as U.S. 40.
The byway that began life as the National Road — America’s first federally built highway into the interior of the young nation — U.S. 40 rolls across the entire state, from New Paris in the west to Bridgeport in the east. To read more, click here to subscribe. >>
