Famous Train Centerpiece of Ohio Goes to the Movie Event

The Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum hosts an April 10 screening of “Emperor of the North” alongside the No. 19 steam engine featured in the film.

Actors Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine face off in “Emperor of the North,” but the other star of the film is the No. 19 locomotive upon which the men clash. Today, the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum in Sugarcreek owns the train used in the 1973 film, and it is scheduled to host an Ohio Goes to the Movies event on April 10 that includes a screening of the movie.

The event is free, but advance registration is required and space inside the Roundhouse is limited. The event begins at 6:30 p.m.as the museum opens to guests. At 7:30, No. 19 departs from the Visitor Center Depot for a short ride to the Roundhouse. The movie screen begins in the Roundhouse at 8:30 p.m., with popcorn and drinks available for purchase. After the movie, attendees have the chance to see No. 19 on display outside.

Set during the Great Depression, “Emperor of the North” follows a world-wise hobo (Marvin) determined to outsmart a railroad conductor with a mean streak (Borgnine). When a younger drifter (Keith Carradine) hops aboard the train, a battle of wits unfolds.

This event is one of many Ohio Goes to the Movies special screenings scheduled between February and October as part of the America 250-Ohio sesquicentennial celebration.
