Established in 1981, this northeast Ohio tradition offers three races — a five-mile run, a 5K and a laid-back one-mile walk — each kicking off after packet pickup in the city’s Public Hall Auditorium. Each racer will snag a finisher medal, customized long-sleeve shirt, post-run refreshments and live entertainment at the start and finish lines. Those participating in the mile will step off at 8:45 a.m.; the other races head out at 9:30 a.m.

Since 2016, participants have flocked to this 5K race with its start line at the Glass City Center in Toledo. More than 5,000 runners in turkey-themed costumes take part in the run-walk, which passes popular destinations like Fifth Third Field and Promenade Park. The event directly supports the city’s Cherry Street Mission; athletes are encouraged to bring travel-sized personal hygiene items and new men’s and women’s undergarments. Families can also opt for a one-mile run and a kids race.

This turkey day tradition promises a four-mile run, as well as a two-mile run-walk, at The Club at Corazon in Dublin. Adult races begin at 9 a.m., with a Kids’ Gobbler Chase kicking off at 8:30 a.m. Participants will receive a hoodie, finisher’s medal and bottle of wine for the Thanksgiving table. Proceeds benefit the 2nd & 7, a Columbus-based nonprofit promoting reading and providing free books for children in need.

Head to the start line at Cincinnati’s TQL Stadium for an adrenaline-pumping start to your Thanksgiving Day. Adults can choose between the Western & Southern 10K and TDR 5K; for the “smallest turkeys,” the event also includes a ProAmpac Kids Fun Run, which spans a quarter mile. One of the longest continuously held road races in the nation, the 10K began in 1909 and winds its way through the Queen City as well as northern Kentucky. Each registrant receives a race bib, custom medal and finisher’s certificate.

For those up for a tall task, this nine-mile loop around Tinkers Creek Gorge in Walton Hills should do the trick. The physically challenging hike, led by Cleveland Metroparks naturalist Jake Kudrna, traverses past waterfalls and gets participants up close and personal with one of the most unique natural landscapes in the region. Consider packing a water bottle and hiking poles (though some of the latter will be available to borrow). Meet at the Hermits Hollow Picnic Area at noon to begin.

It’s off to the races for everyone gathered at Newark’s Dawes Arboretum from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All participants in the adventure receive a small prize, and those who rack up 10,000 steps (or five miles) will also win a special token while supplies last. Register at the visitors center and bring a pedometer to keep track of your progress. When you’re all wrapped up, head back with your stats ready for review.
