From a guided canoe trip along the Maumee Scenic River to a yoga practice set in our state’s only national park, check out these four events celebrating the beauty of the Buckeye State.

Ohio’s state- and metroparks, plus its only national park, offer a wealth of activities year-round in our four-season climate. When summertime rolls around, their calendars get a little fuller, brimming with topical treks and outdoor-inspired demonstrations. Visit the capitol for a fossil frenzy or make your way to one of the Buckeye State’s most-photographed landmarks for a musical fête with these six events coming soon.

Take a Hike: Mining Reclamation and BioBlitz | June 20
Explore natural resources while participating in a 2.6-mile loop hike at Jesse Owens State Park in McConnellsville. Head to the entrance of Sand Hollow Campground and meet at the shelter house to embark on the “bioblitz,” a group activity collecting fauna and flora data, along the way. This particular morning focuses on mining reclamation and is considered moderate to difficult due to tricky footing and steep inclines; participants are encouraged to bring water, snacks and a phone. ohiodnr.gov

Earth Science Summer: Statehouse Fossil Fest | June 25
Cultural and natural history buffs, this one’s for you. The ODNR Division of Geological Survey, Orton Geological Museum and Ohio Statehouse Museum are teaming up for an engaging afternoon all about ancient Ohio. “Unearth a story” at the statehouse, with activities and a guided tour focused on fossils, particularly those that make up the building stones of Columbus. ohiodnr.gov

Guided Birding Canoe Float | June 26
Encounter native birds that call the Maumee Scenic River home and learn about the vital ecosystems that sustain them. Gather at the Van Tassel Wildlife Area in Grand Rapids to begin exploring; paddling experience is recommended, birding know-how is not required and personal flotation devices are mandatory. Float guides will teach participants how to protect birds’ natural habitats. ohiodnr.gov

Watercolor & Ink Botanical Class | June 27
Beginner to intermediate level painters will love this creative program taught by visual artist and designer Renee Hopson. Attendees can brush up on skills like adding background interest to pieces and working with limited tools, which improves dexterity. Head to Activity Center Park in Centerville and make your way to its community room for the 2.5-hour gathering. Registration is required prior to attending. cwpd.org

A Patriotic Fourth at Marblehead Lighthouse | July 4
Enjoy the beauty of Marblehead Lighthouse State Park’s crown jewel on America’s 250th birthday. The evening brings a free pops concert from the Huron-based Firelands Symphony Orchestra. Picnic or walk along the rocky shore, and after the group is wrapped up performing patriotic and summer tunes, stick around for fireworks from Cedar Point. Yoga Hike with Kim Scott Sowinski | July 5
Take a deep breath at Cuyahoga Valley National Park’s Oxbow Meadows in Peninsula. Registered yoga teacher Kim Scott Sowinski will lead participants through a five-senses experience, incorporating asana (yoga postures) and pranayama (breath practices) into a moderately paced hike.
