Suncraft Collective Makes All-Natural Items

Cincinnati-based artist Dani Fraley crafts functional products for the home ranging from wooden cutting boards and plant stands to cotton towels and bags.

Dani Fraley’s knack for interior design led her to study the subject at the University of Cincinnati. That opened the door to five years of carpentry. She started with a small, women-owned design company that specialized in custom furniture and restaurant build-outs. Since 2023, Fraley has carved out a niche for herself with her solo business, Suncraft Collective.

The Cincinnati-based artist focuses on quality, locally handcrafted items for the home. Her plant stands and cutting boards are made using wood sourced from Ohio and Indiana and finished with nontoxic food-grade oil. She also creates the designs that adorn the 100% cotton bags and tea towels made in partnership with a local screen-printing company.

Her cutting boards are solid-slab, meaning they are crafted from one large piece of wood and do not use any glue. Each piece begins as a plank bought at a local mill and is shaped by hand, resulting in cutting boards of slightly varying sizes. It’s a reminder that Fraley’s inventory comes from her own handiwork, rather than a machine.

“I just fell in love with working with my hands,” she says, “and using my creativity and problem solving.”

Nature scenery and fun food items adorn the various tea towels and bags currently on the Suncraft Collective website, and Fraley says she enjoys playing with the geometries and colors of a given design to make it just right.

“It’s helpful to take a step away, take a zoom out, and look at it from across the room,” she says. “‘Does this make me happy? Or what does this evoke? Or how does this feel?’”

The last few years have earned Fraley many repeat customers, some of whom shop her goods at Algin Furniture in Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine neighborhood or her weekend pop-up tent at the city’s Findlay Market.

“The overall goal has been the same: to provide quality, handmade home goods at reasonable prices,” Fraley says. “Things that are going to last you for life.”
