Swensons Brings Back Original Bakery Buns to Classic Menu

The iconic Akron-based drive-in, Swensons, brings back its nostalgic burgers with its original locally-baked buns.

Akron’s drive-in restaurant giant Swensons — known for its burgers and old-school, car-side service — is making some major changes to its menu. Swensons Drive-In recently announced the companywide return of its original buns, baked locally at Akron’s Massoli’s Italian Bakery.

The drive-in chain is also reinstituting its original bun-buttering methods and vertical toasters that will help bring the classic flavors fans remember to the Galley Boy, double cheeseburger, fried bologna and other Swensons favorites.

“At Swensons, our Akron roots made us who we are, and our guests consistently make us better, telling us when things are working and when they are not,” Swensons Drive-In CEO Jeff Flowers said in an Oct. 6 press release.

Flowers also announced the brand would be shifting its focus from monthly menu collaborations and specials to core classics, while still making room to serve up longtime favorites, including the annual fall pumpkin pie shake. This transition, the company says, is rooted in the traditions that gave Swensons Drive-In its loyal following.

“We’ve had some amazing collaborations over the past two years,” Flowers said in the press release, ”but when our guests send us a message like this, we owe it to them to listen and take action.”
