Columbus Screening Celebrates Ohio-Born Poet Mary Oliver

Immerse yourself in the life and words of Ohio native, poet and writer Mary Oliver at the Wexner Center for the Arts’ screening of a new documentary about her work. “Mary Oliver: Saved by the Beauty of the World” from filmmaker Sasha Waters Freyer premiered in select theaters and nationally on PBS this year. The Sept. 25 screening will further explore Oliver’s Ohio roots in the very place she once attended school. 

Oliver was born in Maple Heights in 1935 and went on to attend the Ohio State University and Vassar College. The Pulitzer Prize-winning poet spent her adult life in Provincetown, Massachusetts, but much of her work explores her childhood and the natural beauty of the Buckeye State.

According to a Sept. 14 press release, the film opens Oliver’s famously private world through archival materials and the people moved by her work, including Oprah Winfrey, Stephen Colbert, Steve Buscemi, Lucy Dacus, John Waters, Maria Shriver and former U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón.

The Wex’s Film/Video studio worked closely with Waters Freyer during post-production and as the project came together.

The screening begins at 7 p.m. at the Film/Video Theater and Waters Freyer will be take part in a Q&A following the film.
