New Immersive Augmented Reality Experience Coming to COSI

Starting Jan. 30, visitors to the Columbus science destination can explore and interact with imaginary, virtual worlds through this holographic theater exhibit.

Start the new year with a burst of creativity by making a trip to COSI to check out the Columbus destination’s newest exhibition: Verse COSI, an immersive, holographic theater set to open Jan. 30. The half-hour augmented reality experience uses digital art and storytelling to guide participants through interactive, virtual spaces. Just slip on a pair of lightweight AR glasses and enter a variety of unique settings, designed with color and motion that come together to create expansive imaginary worlds.

“Verse COSI brings together art, technology and imagination in a way that creates a true holographic theater: a theater where guests are not just observing the story but fully stepping inside it,” said Josh Sarver, COSI’s chief experience officer, in a Jan. 7 press release.

Verse COSI is part of a one-year pilot project, and the theater will feature rotating “story worlds” as the year goes on. The first story world features several adventures, including “Everworld: The Unreal Garden.” As the experience periodically refreshes throughout the year, visitors will find reason to return to COSI and discover what new stories they can be a part of.

“At COSI, we are always looking for new ways to engage our community with emerging technologies in meaningful, playful and inspiring ways,” Sarver said in the same Jan. 7 press release. “Verse COSI reflects our belief that science is everywhere and for everyone, and that discovering it should feel exciting, creative and accessible.”

The interactive exhibit is located on COSI’s first floor and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. General admission tickets are not required to experience Verse COSI, although ticket bundles are available for those who are interested in exploring the entire museum.
