3 Critter Encounters in Hocking Hills State Park

Get up close and personal with butterflies, hummingbirds and moths with this trio of late-summer experiences in the southeast Ohio region.

Although Hocking Hills is lauded for its impressive natural features, from caves and caverns to cascading waterfalls, the region’s smallest members are not to be forgotten. For less than $10, experience a lineup of special programming that brings you up close to some of the region’s tiniest residents. Whether you’re looking for a unique late-night safari, an up-close look at hummingbirds or a spectacle of beautiful monarchs, the region has you covered with these three exciting seasonal offerings.

Encounter Hundreds of Nighttime Creatures
For just $6, visitors can have an after-dusk encounter with several moth varieties on excursions at Butterfly Ridge Conservation Center in Rockbridge. These late-night safaris are led by husband-and-wife duo Chris and Kris Kline every second, third and fourth Saturday of the month. On the Klines’ 21-acre private sanctuary, guests are guided through glowing displays lit by UV and mercury vapor lights, which attract hundreds of species each night. Kris and Chris often stay up past 3 a.m. with visitors, showcasing an array of nocturnal insects. For more information, visit butterfly-ridge.com

Become a Hummingbird Expert
Through Labor Day, visit Vinton County’s Lake Hope State Park for the opportunity to get up close and personal with hummingbirds. The program kicks off with an informative introduction by park naturalists, who share insights into hummingbird behavior and tips on how to attract them to your own yard. Guests also get the chance to feed the tiny, fascinating birds using sugar water-filled floral tubes. This free, open-house style event takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. every Thursday through Sunday in September. For more information, visit ohiodnr.gov

Explore the Life Cycle of Monarchs
For a closer look at one of nature’s most fascinating animal migrations, stop by the Monarch Waystation and Butterfly Garden at the Hocking Hills Regional Welcome Center in Logan. The peaceful spot offers a free front-row seat to the butterfly’s full life cycle. Visitors can even take part in tagging and release efforts to support migration research. The garden is part of the Hocking Hills Butterfly Trail, which includes 14 human-sized butterfly wing selfie stations scattered throughout the region. Pick up a map and passport at the Welcome Center or download one online to begin your pollinator adventure. For more information, visit explorehockinghills.com
