Learn About Native Ohio Trees at Spiegel Grove

Join forestry experts and nature lovers at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums for a day of learning, tours, and talks celebrating our state’s trees.

Discover the beauty of Ohio’s native trees at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums’ Tree Symposium at Spiegel Grove. On Sept. 5, special guests from across the state visit the Fremont historical site, museum and arboretum to speak about a range of tree practices, challenges and history.

Spiegel Grove, home to President Rutherford B. Hayes’ house, is accredited as a Level 2 arboretum by The ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program. The site maintains and cares for 100 or more species of trees, making it the perfect place to spend a day immersed in education and entertainment about the diverse species populating our state.

The day starts with coffee, doughnuts and a welcome speech from Christie Weininger, Hayes Presidential Library & Museums executive director. It then launches into a tree tapping and maple syrup-making demonstration by Sandusky County Park District program supervisor Deb Nofzinger.

Then, local 13ABC meteorologist Ross Ellet drops by for a presentation on changing climate conditions, and Hayes Presidential building and grounds superintendent John Havens gives a tour of Spiegel Grove’s population of trees.

After lunch, catch talks from Thomas DeHaas from The Ohio State University and Stephanie Miller, regional urban forester for Northwest Ohio, about the impacts of diseases, pests and native tree species on urban forests.

Whether you're a tree enthusiast or just curious about Ohio’s wildlife, the Tree Symposium is a unique chance to deepen your appreciation for the natural world around us.
