At DOPE Cider House & Winery, fruit-forward ciders share space with in-house wines in a vibrant downtown Youngstown setting. Wooster’s Lincoln Way pairs hard ciders with its estate-made, award-winning wines. It’s easy to linger over the farm-fresh ciders and wines at Spring Hill Cider Works in Geneva. Worthington’s Zen Bee Meadery & Honey Cider crafts approachable session meads and honey ciders, ideal for flight sampling. Smoked barbecue, house cider and live entertainment always draw a crowd at Wilmington’s TinCap Hard Cider and Taproom. Both in Athens, West End Ciderhouse complements Ohio-grown cider with cocktails, beer and wine while Dutch Creek Winery (pictured above) serves orchard-fresh cider along with small-batch mead and fruit wines.

Storied Settings: Many breweries pour history into every pint as former funeral homes, factories and more than a few churches. Cartridge Brewing (pictured above) in Maineville makes good use of the revived Peters Cartridge ammunition factory along the Little Miami River, and Mother Stewart’s Brewing similarly transformed a massive former casket factory in Springfield, both now thriving community gathering spaces. Mellotone Beer Project blends craft beer with Cincinnati history inside a reimagined Over-The-Rhine neighborhood cathedral. In Lakewood, Birdtown Brewing also brings new life to a nearly century-old church. Inside the restored Mansfield mortuary that became The Phoenix Brewing Co., guests sip beer and spirits where a chapel once stood. In Garrettsville, genuine hospitality is fueled by the legacy of a 200-plus-year-old water-driven flour mill at Garrett’s Mill & Brewing Co.

A Brewer For Day: Beer lovers can get behind the equipment at The Brew Kettle-Strongsville and Eudora Brewing in Dayton. The Brew Kettle guides groups through crafting custom beer or wine from ingredients to bottling, and Eudora offers hands-on brewing sessions for groups that return weeks later to bottle. “The people that enjoy it most are craft beer lovers who have always wanted to learn how brewing works,” says Eudora owner Neil Chabut. “Brewing is an art that’s more than 10,000 years old ... it’s been a part of human culture for so long.” Participants of these programs can learn about the process of brewing while enjoying beer, food and friends.
