Riverbank Revelry

Discover folk art, festivals and frontier life along the banks of the Ohio River.

Generations ago, settlers depended on the Ohio River to make their way west. At 981 miles long, this important natural waterway flows through six states: It served as a boundary between slavery and freedom and was central to the Industrial Revolution. Today, barges use it for carrying coal, and 3 million people depend on it for drinking water.

And when warm weather hits the Ohio River region, so do outdoor activities — both on the river and on its shores. From kayaking to quartets to Kentucky Derby events, when you wind your way along the Ohio, you’ll find a wide range of fun in the coming months. To read more, click here to subscribe. >>
