It’s easy to take the places we see every day for granted. The neighborhoods we live in, the businesses we pass on our daily commute and the places we shop are all so commonplace that we rarely see the beauty in them. This week, two exhibits invite viewers to examine the world around them in a different light.
“Looking for the American Dream: Andrew Borowiec’s Ohio Photographs,” at the Akron Art Museum, depicts the historic, blue-collar towns that line the Ohio River alongside images of new lifestyle centers that combine shopping and residences with historic-style architecture. Urban locales are examined in “Cyprien Gaillard: Disquieting Landscapes,” at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus. The photos and film footage show crumbling architecture and urban decay that looks haunting, yet strangely beautiful, through his lens. Both shows will leave you looking at the world around you in a whole new way.
