Each year, more than 3 million visitors commune with nature in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The 33,000-acre, 20-mile recreational area stretches between Independence and Akron and serves as an evolving timeline, grounded in the past through its commitment to conservation and preservation of natural resources, yet firmly rooted in the present with a full schedule of concerts, seasonal retreats and art shows.

Here are four books that will help you plan your trip or partake of this natural wonder without leaving home.

The beauty, history, solitude and recreational opportunities the naturescape affords are exquisitely captured in Cuyahoga Valley National Park: A Photographic Portrait by Ian Adams and Jim Roetzel. Their talents capture all the seasonal splendors of this popular destination. One look, and you can almost hear the rush of Brandywine Falls and smell the iris on the Ira Road Trailhead. (Twin Lights Publishers)

The ultimate handbook to get you where you want to go, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park Trail Guide, compiled by the Cuyahoga Valley Trails Council, is packed with useful information about the area’s plants and animals. Best of all, the easy-to-use maps help hikers, cyclists, skiers and equestrians of all skill levels find the route that’s just right for them. (Gray & Company, Publishers)

Tailor-made for history buffs, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park Handbook by Carolyn V. Platt is packed with 150 years’ worth of photos, many of which chronicle life during the days when mules hauled barges along the Erie Canal and boating parties were a Sunday afternoon pastime. (The Kent State University Press)

Guide Book for the Tourist and Traveler Over the Valley Railway is a facsimile of the first edition that was published in 1880. Travel back in time to explore the scenery of a century or so ago, and get a glimpse of the businesses that thrived along with the train travel. (The Kent State University Press)
