A great and interesting article on this American hero that is not widely know by many Americans. The contributions he and the Ninth Cavalry made to our nation's second oldest national park (Sequoia) during the summer of 1903 were celebrated 2003. In Aug 2004 a tree naming celebration was held in Giant Forest for Colonel Young. Now there are two trees named for African Americans in that park, that park houses five of the largest trees on this earth and Colonel Young saved General Sherman Tree and General Grant Tree. Scientists have determined that General Sherman tree is the largest living thing on this earth and General Grant tree is the third largest tree. Young saved them by fencing them off from vandals as outlinged in his report to Department of the Interior dated Sept. 28, 1903. American Legacy Magazine published this info in its Summer 2003 publication.
