Our Favorite Things

Colleen Kennedy and Kim Brown
Every summer, Ohio Magazine enlists the help of college interns, who provide writing, editing and fact-checking assistance; in turn, they gain valuable (we hope) experience and insights into the world of magazine publishing. This year, we asked interns Colleen Kennedy (left in photo), a Maumee native and graduate of Ohio University, and Kim Brown, a recent Kent State University graduate from Reynoldsburg, to list some of their favorite places to go and things to do in Ohio.

COLLEEN’S LIST

MacQueen’s Orchard, Holland — Three of my favorite fall things: homemade doughnuts, freshly pressed cider and an orchard full of apple trees with fruit ready to be picked. Need I say more? macqueenorchards.com

South Bass Island Campground, Put-In-Bay — Camp along the cliffs for a view so gorgeous, you won’t mind opening your eyes in the morning. dnr.state.oh.us

Athens Farmers Market, Athens — Saturday mornings in southeastern Ohio are best spent strolling, sampling and supporting the local economy. athensfarmersmarket.org

Domo, Toledo — The hybrid born from two of Toledo’s best Japanese restaurants serves up the most unique and delicious maki rolls this side of the Pacific. 419/537-0700

Country Concert, Fort Loramie — A long weekend in July that's chock-full of major-name music acts paired with camping, cut-offs and cowboy hats. Yee-haw. countryconcert.com

Miller’s Chicken, Athens – For days when you’re not counting calories, their chicken is best when consumed at a picnic table with a side of coleslaw. 740/593-6544

Wabash Cannonball Trail, Northwest Ohio — Who needs hills when you have 64 miles of trail cut directly through northwest Ohio’s scenic farmland for hiking, biking and cross-country skiiing? wabashcannonballtrail.org

Clara J’s Tea Room, Maumee — A warm cup of oolong and some finger sandwiches are ideal for mother-daughter-sister-friend bonding. clarajsat219.com

Mohican River, Loudonville — There’s nothing like floating several miles downstream to cool off on a hot, summer day. visitamishcountry.com/recreation.php

Cedar Point, Sandusky — The Mantis, front row, center seat, has been my favorite way to get the adrenaline rushing since I was 48 inches tall. cedarpoint.com

KIM’S LIST

Old Man’s Cave, Hocking Hills State Park, Logan — The hiking trails surrounding this area’s gorge and sandstone cliffs are at their prime during fall. 1800hocking.com/old_mans_cave

Short North, Downtown Columbus Catch a Gallery Hop on the first Saturday of every month or simply stroll along High Street, browse the boutiques and snag a bite to eat anytime. shortnorth.org

Athens Dining  — As an avid food fan, I’ve encountered some tasty plates at Casa Nueva, Bagel Street Deli and Court Street Diner, all Athens staples. athensohio.com

Kent State University Museum, Kent  — The Kent State University Museum is widely known for its fashion galleries, but it also features an array of decorative-art exhibitions. kent.edu/museum/index.cfm

Downtown Hudson — I’m a sucker for cute towns. Hudson has a great hometown feel, shopping and dining, from Green Roots Collection’s items for sustainable living to Main Street Cupcakes’ 120 flavors. merchantsofhudson.com

Easton Town Center, Columbus — Easton is a great spot for shopping and dining. My favorites are Anthropologie, Forever 21, Nordstrom, White House | Black Market, Cheesecake Factory and Crate and Barrel. eastontowncenter.com

Center of Science and Industry (COSI), Columbus — At 21 years old, I’m still a fan of the kid-favorite COSI. It’s impossible to be bored when experiencing permanent exhibits like Space, Progress, Ocean and Life. cosi.org

Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus The Wex, located on The Ohio State University Campus, is an arts and architecture must-see. There’s always something new: artist exhibitions, classic and contemporary films, and dance, theater and music performances. wexarts.org

Rising Park, Lancaster — My favorite thing to do at Rising Park? Hike to the top of 250-foot Mount Pleasant, which offers panoramic views of Lancaster. www.lancasterparks.com

Columbus Crew, Columbus —The games are exciting and Crew Stadium was the first such facility specifically built for Major League Soccer. thecrew.com
