The Ancient Ohio Trail makes it easier to visit and learn about the state’s earthworks.

A small crowd gathers around the egg-shaped mound at the head of the Great Serpent earthworks in Adams County, beneath a brilliant blue sky and with their backs to a broad river valley. The smell of burning sage drifts from a clay pot in the hands of a woman in a red headband.
