Community Connections

Ohio colleges and universities focus on civic engagement and service learning.
Lori Murray

Reilly Brock may have grown up in Berkeley, California, but he knows plenty about rural life in Knox County, Ohio. As a student at Kenyon College in Gambier and an intern with the school’s Rural Life Center, he helped to establish Rural by Design, a community garden initiative that provides free local produce for low-income senior citizens living in Knox County. Reilly grows and harvests the vegetables and packages regular pick-ups that include freshly harvested produce and a recipe. “Healthy produce can be somewhat expensive,” he says. “We are trying to bridge that gap and make healthy food accessible for everyone.”

This initiative is one of the many ways that Ohio colleges and universities are connecting with their communities. To read more, click here to subscribe. >>
