October 2007 Issue
Chairman's Note
Lute Harmon Sr.
In the fall, there is always excitement in the air in Ohio. It is a time of hope and new beginnings. We tell ourselves this will be the year our favorite football team wins it all, our children get straight A’s, and we lose the weight we swore we were going to lose in June.
Here at Ohio Magazine we wanted to get into the spirit of the season, so we thought we’d make a new beginning of our own. As Woody Hayes was fond of saying, “You win with people.” In that respect, business is like football. Ohio Magazine has become a wonderful success story because of its winning team of people. It’s time to recognize their outstanding contributions.
It is my pleasure to announce four promotions:
Lute Harmon Jr. has been named president of Ohio Magazine’s parent company, Great Lakes Publishing Co. During his tenure as publisher of Ohio Magazine, he took the magazine to new heights of readership and advertising, the major ingredients of magazine success. His leadership in making Ohio one of the top magazines in the country will be a great asset in leading Great Lakes Publishing into the future.
Richard Osborne, editor, is being promoted to publisher and editor. He will assume responsibility for the business side of the magazine, as well as the editorial. It is hard to say anything more about Rich than the fact that Ohio Magazine has won the highly coveted “Ohio’s Best Monthly” award four times in a row — each and every one of the top awards the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists has given for the period covering his tenure as editor. I’m not sure what awards publishers can compete for, but if there’s one out there, I’m sure Rich will win it.
Karen Matusoff, advertising director, is being promoted to associate publisher, a move that recognizes not only her achievements at the magazine, but also her status as one of the state’s most dedicated and respected leaders in the tourism industry. Karen has been at the forefront of efforts to grow Ohio’s tourism business, and we fully expect her to continue to use Ohio Magazine to help promote and build this important sector.
Vivian Pospisil, managing editor, is being promoted to executive editor. Leo Burnett, founder of a famous ad agency, used to say that after all the creative meetings and three-hour client lunches, someone finally has to sit down and write the ad. In our case, when all the stories are written, someone has to edit them, put the pages together with the art director and get the magazine to the printer on time. Vivian is that person. Leo Burnett would have loved her.
If we look over our shoulder, we are proud of where we’ve been. But the real excitement lies ahead. This winning team of newly promoted people has just one mission: to bring you the best of Ohio in every issue.
So along with winning football teams, straight A’s and astounding weight loss, as a reader of Ohio Magazine you can look forward to one more thing: the beauty, the adventure and the fun that is Ohio.
