Angling for Adventure

Don your waders — northeast Ohio is home to excellent steelhead fishing.

A lawyer, a carpenter and an unemployed factory worker stand in a row in a frosty river. The water swirls and ripples across a shallow shoal and around their fishing waders.

The lawyer is wearing a pair of top-of-the-line waders — $700 from a popular outdoor catalog — with a matching wading jacket. For the others, the gear is oft-patched duck-hunting waders and the same Carhartt jackets they wear on the job.

The three pay no attention to the differences in gear or the snowflakes slowly drifting onto the water. Their concern is not the cold — they are focused on what swims in the river’s current: Lake Erie steelhead trout.

The silvery, rainbow rockets, on a migrating trek from Ohio’s Great Lake, draw legions of fishing enthusiasts to their spawning areas throughout northeast Ohio. To read more, click here to subscribe. >>
